The Clinical Mass Spectrometry Core Facility, located in the NTU Centers of Genomic and Precision Medicine, was founded in 2010. In recent years, precision medicine has become a significant trend worldwide. Through medication adjustments based on therapeutic drug monitoring data or biomarker concentrations, it has allowed for personalized treatments with improved therapeutic efficacy and reduced side effects for patients. In our aging society, the importance of precision medicine is growing due to the complexity of medication and the multiple comorbidities of the elderly. For a better understanding of these age-related diseases, a reliable measurement of the levels of these drugs and biologically active molecules is essential.
Clinical mass spectrometry is a powerful and robust tool for precision medicine due to its high sensitivity and technical capability to analyze various detectable compounds. In this core facility, we develop all analytical methodologies based on two types of MS instruments, LC-MS and GC-MS, depending on the requirements of clients. Coupled with different chromatographic techniques, these MS instruments enable us to analyze different targets ranging from small organic molecules to protein drugs. For various analytical applications, the core can share technical expertise in sample preparation and instrument choice and offer assistance in data analysis and interpretation. We expect the final results from these platforms to address more scientific issues and enhance precision medicine in clinical practice.
